On Kitty's "Why Emulate the Land..."
I just have to add some of my observations about my country living in it for more than 27 years.1. Our last colonizers were the Americans. Pinoy history books always say that we were freed June 12, 1898, but it's just propaganda. World history books mention that we were sold by Spain to America along with Cuba, Puerto Rico, etc. - I'm not really sure which countries but I'm sure they're ex-colonies of Spain. We weren't really free, and the way things are going, I'm not even sure if we are free at all.
2. We are VERY reliant on the Americans. I don't think we would have defeated the Spaniards were it not for their "help" - of course they have hidden agenda. Even during the Japanese occupation, their presence was very crucial in shooing them off. Remember "I shall return"? UP until the GMA administration with the VFA agreement, the Pinoy government always feel that they need the Americans, and rightly so. With the type of politicians we have, I think we need all the help we can get.
3. American English is the language we're used to, and I say American English because I have to admit that you I don't understand some British and Australian accents. The language barrier hinders us from trying to learn other cultures and other ways of living. Heck, I've always wanted to read "Madame Bovary" in its original text but I'm just getting into that. The only shows cable TV can broadcast are American reality shows, American talk shows, American sitcoms, etc. You get the gist.
4. Everyone here's too caught up with the "American Dream", that it is the land of milk and honey, that everyone from America has a house and lot and a car. I don't blame them since this is what the media feeds them.
I don't propose any solutions to these issues since I don't claim that to be an expert sociologist. All I know is that we still have a lot of issues to figure out as a country. Yun lang pow.
